Now Shipping: The EX8216

Juniper Networks started shipping the EX8216 on May 1, 2009, one quarter after the launch of the EX8208. Releasing two such large-scale projects back-to-back would not have been possible without the extraordinary dedication of our engineering team, and I’d like to take a moment to recognize their accomplishments. Doubling the EX8208’s density was not a trivial exercise; everything from the ASICs to power and cooling needed to be planned in advance, while systems and software had to be designed, built and tested in parallel. One advantage of this approach was that any issue found on one platform could be fixed on the other at the same time, and the EX8208 backplane and EX8216 midplane could provide identical interfaces to the EX8200 line cards. As a result, when we first powered up the EX8216 early last year, it just worked.

The release of the EX8208 modular Ethernet switch this quarter was a culmination of nearly three years of development at Juniper. Rather than take the typical path of acquisition, we chose to create a startup within Juniper to build a new generation of Ethernet switching products. This extra effort would allow us to deliver a seamless end-to-end portfolio of network infrastructure based on JUNOS® Software and leveraging the silicon and architectural heritage of Juniper’s carrier-class routers. Juniper delivered the first milestone in March 2008 with the EX3200 and EX4200 lines of fixed-configuration switches. Juniper now expands its switching portfolio with the EX8200 line of modular chassis.
