Anytime, anywhere connectivity. Hyperconnectivity. Call it what you will, but what it equates to is we – me, you, and just about everyone in the worldwide workforce – are always connected to something. We not only want, but many times need to be connected, wherever we are.

In their most recent quarterly report on today’s global, mobile workforce (The iPass Global Mobile Workforce Report), iPass, a worldwide leader in managing mobile connectivity for large enterprises and global carriers through mobility and cloud services, reported that 88% of those surveyed work from the road, including 84% from coffee shops, restaurants or bars.

Our need to be always connected has taken many of our employers – and in a domino effect, their service providers – by surprise. This has caused a significant spike in mobility costs, which in turn has driven up the mobility expense incurred by many enterprises today, especially those with worldwide globetrotters. Since mobile workers must be connected all the time, Internet connectivity has become a mobile worker’s lifeline.

Now, Juniper Networks and iPass deliver simple anytime, anywhere trusted network connectivity and role-based, secure, mobile remote access through a single client over a myriad of worldwide connectivity, types and means.

Let’s face facts: Today’s workforce is more mobile and remote than ever! Cultivating a mobile, remote workforce is a necessity for today’s business. Remote workers significantly reduce overhead costs. They enable organizations to conduct business worldwide, around the clock. Plus, the ability to be remote and work helps businesses capture and retain top talent, wherever that talent may be.

Gartner, Inc. has estimated the number of worldwide remote workers will pass 46 million this year (2011). A recent report by non-profit WorldatWork (Telework 2011: A Special Report From WorldatWork) states that the teleworking population in 2010 was 26.2 million people, which according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics represents nearly 20% of the U.S. adult working population. Imagine, almost 1/5th of all U.S. adult workers work remotely! And, as of June 9, 2011, the U.S. Federal government’s Telework Enhancement Act went into effect, requiring federal agencies to draw up policies to govern and promote teleworking.

However, productivity while a user is remote or traveling outside of their corporate office continues to be an issue. The number of applications today that are “heavy” and data-laden, or that are rich media based has simply exploded. Wide area network bandwidth remains limited and can be prone to significant latency issues. Plus, protocol and application chattiness are also major impediments. These limitations impact the connection experience for remote, traveling and branch users. Their productivity while remotely accessing the network and applications can be severely affected.

In the Information Security field, we're faced with a constant barrage of bad news: new vulnerabilities, exploits, and successful attacks. When we do our jobs well, there's no news at all. Just an absence of bad news as systems hum along normally and the ever-present storm of attacks is deflected. But maybe it's good once a year to reflect on the good news of information security. So let's take a few minutes to give thanks for some pieces of good news from this year.

I have been in this industry for almost 30 years. In the pantheon of words that have been abused by marketing folks during that time, the term “cloud” has to rate near the very top. Today everything is a cloud. Too bad. “Cloud” is a great metaphor to describe shared, virtualized resource pools. A good friend of mine recently pulled out a slide from 1997 where I used the term and a pictorial depiction of a cloud to describe dynamic pools of compute and storage resources. It got me to thinking: am I to blame?

ddd: Many thanks for your interest in the Juniper WLAN solution. We continue to invest and deliver enhancements to the existing portfolio and continued innovation. In July of this year, Juniper began shipping the newest software release for the WL family. Release 7.5 includes secure remote branch capability which enhances Juniper’s leadership position in local switching to enable branch deployments without the need for a controller; spectrum management, the industry’s first spectrum analysis capability for the mainstream 802.11n market to detect, analyze and plan around non-wifi interference. Juniper believes that non-wifi spectrum management should be available and affordable for all deployments, rather than just on premium APs and we have protected our customer’s investment in the process by making it available on our highest volume WLA522 AP which has been shipping for over a year. In September we began shipping the WLC880, a new midrange controller with support for up to 256 APs and secure remote branch deployments. Stay tuned for further enhancements to our portfolio including newer APs and enhanced management tools

The guile and the deceit of malware hit home recently! In separate incidents spaced by a couple of days, two of my self-ordained “security savvy” friends fell prey !

In the first instance, my friend got an e-mail at her work address (first red flag) from LinkedIn with an innocuous looking link that tempted her to click it to see what three of her contacts had been up to – the guile here being that the perpetrators were using a mechanism that LinkedIn users are accustomed to – periodic opt-in emails about their contacts whereabouts. Except that in this case the e-mail was not from LinkedIn but was a phishing attack. A click was all it took for the malware to install itself – likely through ActiveX or Javascript – and it mined all of my friend’s contacts in Facebook, Gmail, and [Outlook?] Address Book and sent individual invitations to the tune of 600 folks – including roofing contractors, maid services, hospital administrators … on LinkedIn inviting them to join her network. To top it all, she did not even realize that this had transpired for well over a week; it was only when she started getting random folks accepting her “invitations” that she surmised there was something spooky going on. Checking her “sent invitations” did not yield any results. She had to delve into her “Trash” to see the spate of invitations purportedly from her to all and sundry. The malware had conveniently remembered to delete all the sent invitations so that it would be harder to find unless the user went into the trash folder – talk about not leaving any loose ends!

Apart from the obvious violation of privacy and sense of outrage that she felt, her aura of impregnability built by years in the steeped security business took a drubbing too! The lesson here is that even for the best of us, the sophistication and evolution of malware needs to be treated with respect and we need to be on guard all the time – as the saying goes “guilty until proven innocent” and we need to apply this to every facet of our online world.

Next time I will delve into the specifics of the second incident!

With the evolution to SOA-based applications and shared storage, however, the data center network has taken on a new role, becoming an extension of the server and its memory hierarchy.

As summer passes by and fall rolls in we can expect cloudy days to be here soon. A similar trend is happening in the data center space as well. It is getting “cloudy” with the creation of mega data centers in the Internet. The explosive growth of the Internet together with advances in the compute space such as virtualization technologies is making it very attractive to build large data centers that could be shared by multiple tenants. From the users’ vantage point, it is attractive to move their data centers to the cloud as it reduces the overhead of maintaining and operating them and also provides them an easy way to scale or shrink the resources needed in a dynamic fashion. Not so fast, an important aspect that needs to be considered in this transition is securing the traffic that flows in and out of these data centers.

This week, I’ve been at an IETF meeting in Quebec City, wrapping up the IETF NEA effort (getting NAC standards approved as IETF RFCs). Looking around the IETF, I see many well-intentioned efforts but I know from my 15 years of experience in IETF that few standards actually meet their goals. Why?

A successful standard solves a critical customer problem that requires multi-vendor interoperability. This translates into substantial customer demand for solutions that implement the standard, which equals money, which drives vendors to implement the standard. That’s the way things work in our economy. Standards must increase profits for customers and vendors alike.

A successful standard stays focused. Start with a few motivated customers and vendors. Write up a clear description of the customer problem you’re solving. Create a few use cases that explain how this standard will solve the problem. Now simplify. Agree on the most urgent part of the problem and the smallest use case needed to solve that problem. Put everything else in Future Work. You must start with a manageable success and build from there.

Cisco AnyConnect or any number of mobile VPN clients in the market serve an important purpose of securing mobile device traffic to the corporate and enforcing corporate policies. However, the poster of the comment reflects the prevailing widespread misconception that this alone protects the device and by extension the enterprise assets from attack. This conviction ignores that a VPN client does not address a range of critical issues from device backup/restore, remote wipe, removable media on the device as a source of data leakage, SMS spamming or device protection against attacks from various radio interfaces. This should whet your appetite. Now go ahead and read the book and then you can really sleep soundly !

If you as an IT administrator have spent sleepless nights wondering what to do with the onslaught of mobile devices in your enterprise and when the day will come when you get summoned to the corner office to explain a security breach that has occurred under your watch – do we have a sleeping pill for you !

Coming in August – “Mobile Device Security for Dummies” (ISBN 978-0470927533), is your ticket to a better night’s sleep (no offense to the mattress manufacturer who goes by a similar tag line).

The book delves into the deepest recesses of what makes these smart devices so potent and the burgeoning list of capabilities that they amass over time and the potential hazard each of these capabilities brings forth with it – and for some odd reason the marketing department of the handset vendors do not explicitly call out these risks!

For most of the last four months I’ve been on the road, doing what I enjoy most: talking with customers about the benefits of a data center fabric and the QFabric architecture. That is the best part of my job, and I haven’t had this much fun in a long time.

It’s been particularly interesting to observe what a mind-expanding concept the QFabric architecture is for most customers. They quickly grasp the benefits of a flat, any-to-any fabric to interconnect their data center infrastructure, and the concept of single-hop latency for all data flows while eliminating the challenges of managing the physical locality of processing and data is compelling as they virtualize their data centers. The ability to manage the fabric as a single, logical entity while eliminating the need to run multi-link protocols such as Spanning Tree or TRILL is almost too good to be true.

We recently released the Day One: Junos Tips, Techniques, and Templates 2011 book!

This book was developed with significant input from members of the J-Net community. Users submitted tips that they thought other users would find helpful. The editors mostly just built upon the tips that users submitted. Therefore, in a sense, this is a book that you created.

The editors learned a few things as we put this together. In fact, I've been able to put some of these tips & tricks to use already.

For example, I now regularly use “show | match <interface> | display set” (e.g. “show | match ge-0/0/0 | display set”) to show every place in the configuration that references an interface.

Also, I recently helped configure a router that will emulate a partial Internet feed for one of our certification exams. The router’s configuration includes thousands of static routes. I used the “apply-flags omit” configuration command to hide those static routes so that they would not clutter the configuration when a user displays it.

I know it’s been a while since I last had a chance to share my thoughts on this site, but I couldn’t resist this one. Cisco recently announced its “End-to-End High-Performance Trading Fabric.” A couple of things about this announcement struck me as particularly interesting.

First, it doesn’t appear that there is any real news here other than the fact they released performance figures for their Nexus 3068 switch. It is so unlike Cisco to publicize its performance data; low latency of its switches is not one of their strengths. Cisco has not published performance numbers on the Nexus 5548 and for a good reason. The 5548’s performance on packets sizes of 512B and less is egregious.

Folks,

We recently released the Day One: Junos Tips, Techniques, and Templates 2011 book! This book was developed with significant input from members of the J-Net community. Therefore, in a sense, this is a book that you created.

The editors learned a few things as we put this together. In fact, I've been able to put some of these tips & tricks to use already. We trust you will also find this book useful.

We received many more tips, techniques, and templates than we published. If we didn't publish one of your submissions, please don't feel badly. It is not necessarily a reflection of the quality of your submission. Rather, we tried to publish the tips, techniques, and templates we felt would be have the most relevance to the widest audience. (The editors even rejected one of my submissions. :-) ) Save your unpublished tips & tricks for later this year. If there's enough interest, we may begin work on a 2012 edition.

The book is currently available on our website and via Amazon as both a book and eBook. We also expect it to be available as an eBook in the iTunes store soon.

Please check out the book. We hope you find it to be useful!

And, again, thank you to the many who submitted tips! You made this book possible!

Jonathan Looney

(lead technical editor for the book)

I was recently flown out to Juniper HQ in Sunnyvale to record an on-camera interview about my two IPv6 Day One books for an episode of Junos Connect. Although the interview was completed in about 15 minutes after just 3 takes (two to be sure we had it, one due to someone walking through the shot), the trip was an action packed whirlwind tour thanks to Cathy Gadecki, who arranged the whole thing.

Some of the highlights included:

Recording a couple IPv6 related podcasts with Dan Backman.

Learning about the new mini-MX’ that Juniper is rolling out from John Lehane.

A great chat about NAT444 and other transition technologies with Paul Abbott, who is also interviewed in the Junos Connect video.

A fabulous sushi dinner with Mike (the speed reader) Bushong and team (Mike was actually around for all the meals, hmm).

A very entertaining breakfast conversation with Patrick Ames, Becca Nitzan and a group of other Day One authors.

And an amazing lunch on Wednesday with Alain Durand and David Ward (both ridiculously smart and super fun to talk to).

All around an amazing visit, dense with great conversations with super-smart folks.

Of course the final highlight was the primary purpose of the trip, recording the Junos Connect interview! A green room, professionally applied makeup, lights, cameras, full production crew… It was a great experience, in large part thanks to Kara Tsuboi and Julie Wider.

Without further adieu, here’s the IPv4 and IPv6 coexistence, NAT44 and IPv6 Books edition of Junos Connect:

After
30 years in this industry, I am starting to detect a pattern. Every so often, a new product comes to the
market that forever changes the industry—and changes what is possible. This is
a rare event; yet in my career, I have had the privilege to personally participate
in four such episodes.

The
first time I was a hardware product manager at HP when we rolled out the
world's first RISC
microprocessor-based server. It was seven
times faster than a DEC VAX 11/780 at a quarter of the cost. It was my job to convince customers to
implement something called RISC into their data centers—ironically the most
risk-averse part of the IT infrastructure.
More than once, I had to explain that "really, it is spelled with a
C, not a K.”

At
the time, RISC was a revolutionary new architecture based on the concept that
less is more. By simplifying the
instruction set, it was possible to shrink more of the computer system onto a
single piece of silicon. The result was dramatic. Whereas the VAX implemented the system across
13 separate boards interconnected via a bus, we were able to implement the main
parts of the server on a single board.
Faster, cheaper and more reliable, the child of Joel Birnbaum's powerful
vision was a remarkable achievement. It
forever changed the way computers were built.
It was the logical path forward.
