A new report from industry research firm Dell’Oro Group is forecasting that while the total Ethernet Switch market will drop about 20 percent in 2009, one of the biggest drops since 2001, it will see some uptick in 2010. The increased adoption of 10 Gigabit Ethernet and data centers build outs will be the main drivers for Ethernet Switch market growth beyond 2009. Key players in driving these trends will be the presence of Cisco in the server market, Hewlett Packard’s increased focus on its data center product suite in addition to IBM’s move into the Ethernet Switch market via its recent OEM partnership with Juniper Networks.
Alan Weckel, director of Ethernet Switch Market Research at Dell’Oro Group, said in a press release that while data centers will help fuel the Ethernet flames, he cautions that it won’t return to the same levels seen in previous years. “We believe that the data center will be one of the largest drivers for growth beyond 2009, as the market is expected to begin expanding again in 2010. However, it will be difficult for the market to return to the robust growth rates it enjoyed over the past 5 years,” he said.
