A reader asked me to comment on the acquisition of SonicWALL, so that’s what I’ll do now. Yes, I sometimes take requests, just like a washed-up lounge lizard. The announced transaction has been well documented in the business and trade press. An investor group led by private-equity firm Thoma Bravo, and comprising the Ontario Teachers’ [...]
Earlier this week, Juniper Networks unveiled new switches, routers, software, and services, all of which were positioned as helping enterprises adapt their network infrastructure to increasingly virtualized application requirements. In Juniper’s worldview, that adaptation involves an evolutionary transition from relatively complex, three-layer networks to simpler, flatter, single-layer networks. Junper calls it the 3-2-1 progression in [...]
We should know by now that Google’s conflict with China isn’t about censorship. Instead, it’s about intellectual property. Google wants to defend and protect its intellectual property, whereas hackers based in China seem intent on plundering it.
Questions remain as to whether and how the hackers are affiliated with China’s government. We might never get [...]

Yesterday Juniper Networks announced a $50-million venture fund. Called the Junos Innovation Fund, it will primarily target VC-backed early and growth-stage startups offering products and technologies that run on or with Juniper’s Junos network-based operating system.
Juniper will make fund investments during the next two years, focusing on networking technologies, applications, and services that further [...]

In my post earlier today on Cisco’s latest quarterly results, I mentioned in passing — one line, really — that Cisco’s security revenue was flat.
Jon Oltsik, a principal analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group, expounds on Cisco’s inability to boost its security revenue.
He mentions that other vendors — Check Point, Juniper, Symantec, and McAfee [...]

For a day, Juniper took center stage in the networking firmament. The company preened and strutted while making a series of product, positioning, and partnership announcements that amounted to an old-fashioned, but somewhat new-media, promotional onslaught.
The announcements and related analyst briefings included a stop at the New York Stock Exchange — a recent customer [...]

In announcing their OEM agreement today, Dell and Juniper Networks potentially have triggered an interesting sequence of events among vendors of enterprise servers and networking gear.
The deal itself will see Dell rebrand Juniper’s MX Series routers, EX Series Ethernet switches, and SRX Series services gateways as Dell PowerConnect products.
In many respects, the deal [...]

On the world’s stock markets and bourses, a company’s shares will appreciate or depreciate for many reasons. When earnings releases are announced, however, the expectations of market analysts and investors are critical to how the results will be received.
Juniper Networks is a prime example. In salubrious times – yes, we can still remember those, [...]

Despite difficult economic headwinds, F5 Networks sails ahead smoothly.
The application-delivery network specialist — whose competitors include Cisco Systems, Citrix Systems, and Juniper Networks — announced fourth-quarter financial results last night that surpassed market expectations. It also gave strong first-quarter guidance that ran ahead of analyst projections.
Fourth-quarter net income increased to $28.4 million, [...]

After reading a Wall Street Journal piece about how Juniper Networks could emerge as a potential acquirer of Brocade Communications, I thought about what it all might mean.
When Brocade or its agent Qatalyst Partners leaked that the company was up for grabs and that HP and Oracle were potential buyers, I thought probably just one [...]

We can respectfully argue as to whether 3Com will rise again as a meaningful contender in enterprise networking. My view is that 3Com won’t make the cut, but I respect the opposing positions others have taken.
Some of 3Com’s advocates point to its cash holdings, its low debt, its standing as a low-cost enterprise-networking alternative [...]
